History of Klínová bouda

From 1676 to the present day — a miners' hut, a famous mountain inn, fires and returns. This is the story of Klínová bouda.

Three and a half centuries in the mountains

A story written since 1676

  1. 1676

    Founding of the lodge

The original Klínova Bouda was founded as far back as 1676, on the site of what was reportedly the original hut built by workers who carried ore from Svatý Petr to Dolní Dvůr so they would have somewhere to shelter from bad weather. The south-facing forty-hectare meadow is said to have come into being in the 17th century as an economic base for the silver mines in Svatý Petr.

  2. 1814

Year-round life and the first teacher

Unlike other meadow enclaves at the same altitude, Klínovky was home not only to summer huts — the mountain folk lived here all year round. That is why, from as early as 1814, a private teacher came here from the nearby Renner huts. In those days even a retired soldier could qualify as a teacher. Lessons were held in various cottages, and children from the Renner huts and all three enclaves of Pláň came here as well.

  3. Late 19th c.

    The birth of Klínová bouda

During the tourism boom at the end of the 19th century, at least one cottage in every mountain meadow enclave was turned into a mountain guest inn. At Klínové boudy it was Hermann Buchberger and his wife Wilhelmina who tapped the local tourist potential. At the end of the 19th century they owned the two highest-lying cottages by the tourist trail; the upper one they rebuilt into what would soon become the renowned Klínová bouda. Right on their doorstep met the paths from Pláň, Svatý Petr, Výrovka, and the Fries and Renner huts.

  4. 1903

A one-room school of its own

In 1903 the village of Volský Důl, to which Klínové boudy then belonged, built a one-room school of its own for the twenty-eight local children.

  5. 1912

    The first fire

During seventy years of operation, the lodge was struck by misfortune three times. It first burned down in 1912.

  6. 1913

    Rebuilding and sale

A year later the Buchbergers rebuilt it and at once sold it to the Bönsch brothers from Luční bouda.

  7. 1926

The era of the Braun family

In 1926 they appointed Johann Braun of Braunberg — or Hnědý Vrch in Pec — as manager. Alongside a mountain farm with three cows and a pair of draught horses, his family offered guests accommodation and, above all, a place to sit in a stylish inn with live music and dancing.

  8. 1945

    Tragedy and nationalisation

After the Second World War, in May 1945, post-war partisans shot the innkeeper Braun without cause, right in front of the lodge and before the eyes of his family. State organisations then ran the place for the next twenty-five years.

  9. 1970

The lodge burns to the ground

In the winter of 1970 the lodge burned to the ground, and for forty long years Klínové boudy was left without any fitting replacement.

  10. 2003

    A new beginning ("Tesla")

In 2003 a private owner acquired the neighbouring lodge known as "Tesla" from the Tesla Hloubětín company.

  11. 2005–2010

    The great reconstruction

Between 2005 and 2010 the lodge was completely reconstructed into its present form and opened to the public under the name "Nová Klínovka".

  12. 2016

    Bouda Klínovka

In 2016 the lodge was bought by Infinmed s.r.o., which — intent on breathing life back into the lodge and reviving the long-standing tradition of this beautiful mountain lodge — gave it the name "Bouda Klínovka".

  13. 2017

    Today

    Life and the herd return

Since 2017 the lodge Bouda Klínovka has been run by František Zálešák, who lives here with his family. He founded the Klínové boudy Mountain Ranch and began farming. After many long years, life returned to Klínové boudy — and with it the beautiful Highland cattle, ideal for mountain meadows.
